So, protocol question

A teacher at my daughter's school, who I did one of my practicums with and who I still have a pretty good casual contact with, is retiring. Not sure what grade he's teaching right now, but it's in the 7-9 range (not my preferred level, but OK, and the school itself is great). This would amazing for several reasons to take over, not the least of which just having a job, but we'd also be able to take her out of before and after school care and save a few bucks (and I could walk to work). I know he's retiring from the school newsletter so I'm not snooping that way, and I have his email both from the practicum and from working for the same board. He flat out asked me in a joking-not-joing way a year and a half ago if I wanted a job in a year. (he wouldn't get the final say but might have some input)
What's the right way to approach this?
