The previous boss (who we'll call Janice) was the one who crushed my confidence.
There are many stories, including the time I had been working on-site at a client's offices for 6 months. She made me come back to our office for a meeting in which she told me that one of her other clients told her that they don't like me. She didn't have anything more specific or constructive that I could actually do something about. Just "they don't think you are a very good lawyer".
So why the fuck drag me all the way into the office just to tell me something that will make me feel shitty and that may not even be true? And then I have to go back out and try to do a good job at Client 1's.
Janice also completely stopped speaking to me or acknowledging my existence after Zoe died. Would literally walk past my office saying hello to everyone around me but without looking at me.
Later than same year, she told a bunch of partners in the group, "Yeah, Jen's had a hard year, but she's lazy and she's never going to be the lawyer she once was."
I don't hate anyone and I don't wish anything bad for her, but she is a horrible, horrible person.
