running out of fuel? With the weight it was carrying, the plane probably couldn't hold enough fuel to make the distance of the flight.

And there reportedly had been a fuel stop planned, but they were late departing and the airport where they planned to refuel would have been closed by the time they arrived :(

(the plane is capable of covering the distance under certain circumstances. Empty of passengers, it almost certainly would have been fine)
