The first statement is up for interpretation. Something unsaid but strongly hinted at is that she guided him down the path about how her mind works. He commented on it early in the conversation. Don't get caught up in the 18 months later part since time no longer applies to her. He explicitly states that he doesn't understand why he has to provide her this information. That's the film's way of giving her agency. Whether that works for you or not is a personal decision.
As for the second part, while I didn't interpret it that way, people involved with the production have referred to the aliens as disintegrating rather than vanishing. I actually dislike that version of events, but that seems like the intent from the production crew.
