This Italian vote tonight, and the read of the ramifications, confuses me a bit.

The PM, who has seen a pretty sizable drop in popularity, wants a Constitutional Amendment. This is seen by some as a referendum on the PM I guess. The Amendment would shrink the Italian Senate and give the PM more freedom to enact laws directly, as I understand it.

'No' votes to this are being seen as 'populist' and the PM says he will resign if the Amendment loses. But to me, keeping Constitutional status quo doesn't seem like 'populism' to me? It sorta feels to me like this is being over-read as far as the populist revolt tones go, no?
