You can try adding a flash blocker or HTML5 blocker extension to Chrome or Firefox. Another option is to use Tampermonkey. There's a script that will -- (edited)

allow you to stop autoplaying videos. It won't block the element from showing up but it will stop it from running automatically. If you use Tampermonkey you want to search for a script that will change the preload attribute of the video tag from auto to none. That might be more than you want to do.
