I have a black canvas duffle bag I bought at a surplus store 30 years ago for a trip to Australia. We've been all over together.

For shorter trips, if you don't fill it up, it will cram into an overhead bin. For longer trips, if it's full, you'll need to check it. It's virtually indestructible, and doesn't look like there's likely to be anything worth stealing in it.
