Clinton bet it all on the idea Trump was unfit. She ignored the idea that the Midwest voters were drinking trump's sand because they didn't know the difference.

The lesson needs to be learned to sell the successes better (Obama's saving of the auto industry), and offer solutions, even if they are bullshit.

These people don't want government help. They want to earn their lot in life, and take govt help when necessary...but not as a crutch. Relying on government isn't their desire so affirming that reliance just undercuts their cores.
