I seriously doubt they hate money that much. This thing is selling far more than any comparable product (Atari, Sega, etc). -- (edited)

From the numbers I've seen, they had between 1 million and 2 million NES Classics worldwide available from launch to the end of the year. They probably should have known it would sell more than what they ordered, but I doubt it's on purpose.
