Looks like the Buckaroo Banzai series at Amazon is in trouble due to a lawsuit.

The writer and director (Earl Mac Rauch and Walter Richter) of the movie claim they shopped a franchise around back in the '80s and MGM opted to purchase only a single movie from the available slate.
MGM is now in talks to make a series with Amazon, helmed by Kevin Smith. But the Rauch and Richter claim they still own the property and have sent letters to that effect. MGM is not happy and has filed suit.
Following news of the lawsuit, Smith dropped out of the project, claiming he did not want to proceed without Rauch and Richter.
A few points:
- Firstly, this franchise lends itself well to a film sequel so long as Peter Weller and Jeff Goldblum reprise their roles.
- Secondly, there have been plenty enough good TV adaptions of cult material that I'm not concerned if it's rebooted. It wouldn't take away from the cult status of the original. I just don't think that Weller and Goldblum would be up for a TV series so I think the only option is a reboot, because Banzai, the Next Generation, with some teen heartthrob playing Buckaroo's son would be a fucking sin.
- Thirdly, I believe Kevin Smith can make it work, but he'll only agree to it if MGM and the creators make nice, so get on with it!
- Fourthly, what took MGM - or the creators - so fucking long? DO IT.
