You need to hire all of the support staff (construction, science, etc.) to allow you to upgrade your laser and gloves. Those upgrades are required to handle new (and some old) minerals you'll need. For instance, the regular laser can no longer mine titanium.

I bought a freighter and set my base on that - which is great because it gives me extra storage and a mobile base that I can have follow me as I continue to explore.

I plan to continue normal mode until I figure out all the new things about this update - then plan to go back and try survival mode - which I've been really unsuccessful at.
