I'm sure there was some intrigue at this level at some point in the history but I'd be hard pressed to think of the modern equivalent...

you have the traditional international rival of the US, of the last 60 years, the head of it in fact, who the US intelligence community says directly interfered in a US Presidential election. If that doesn't give the electors pause I do not know what will. (I don't think anything changes but...yeesh).
