In response to "Doesn't it snow there every year and more than just once or twice? This isn't like when it snows in the south, is it? -- nm" by Krusty

It does not snow in Portland every year. At least not with any significant accumulation.

And even then, it usually melts very quickly. Even freezing temperatures are not that common. In normal years, we might get a smattering of days with a little bit of freezing stuff. Then, every few years, we'll have a snow storm like this.

But this year, we had a storm just a week ago -- like this, but with a nice layer of freezing rain on top -- and the forecast calls for another similar storm about a week or 10 days from now.

The last time something like this occurred was in early February 2014. We got about six inches of snow over the course of two days, and it stuck around for another two days. The city was basically shut down the entire time.

December 2008 had a record snowfall: seven inches in one 24-hour period and 11 inches over two days. That was utterly awful. I lived on a side street that was never plowed and the snow stuck around for a week.
