resent it. Affirmative action is one of these issues - "we're all equal, so why are some people given special treatment?" etc.
Welfare (or more correctly, perceptions about welfare) is another.
Responses:
I get the resentment, in that I can at least wrap my head around the perception but the fact that they don't feel that they've benefited from

I think they truly don't see themselves as getting government benefits - or at least, their fair share.
