Here's my boss's idea of cost cutting.

Every mid-December (today) we give each of the staff a $600 bonus - "here's some spending money for the holiday" type of gift, unrelated to our overall financial performance for the year.
One of our major employees who has been here for three years is leaving for another job next Thursday - 3 days before Christmas. My boss has decided to leave him off the gift list, using the logic that he's no longer an ongoing employee, and we need to cut costs. My boss handed out the other employee bonuses in envelopes today - no mention of any of this to the departing employee, but he can see what's going on since he's been here for previous December bonuses. Our annual budget is roughly $2 million.
Also, we're having an office birthday party for him on Monday.
