I'll wager that Apple withholds extending its contract withi AT&T until they can measure the success of their Verizon devices.

People can say all they want "I like Verizon more than AT&T" but Apple will wait to see if people vote with their pocketbooks. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that people abandoned their other providers to join AT&T when the iPhone was released, but will they do the same with (whatever) hits Verizon? I'll wager that the answer is yes. And then AT&T will have quite a hill to climb to convince Apple to extend exclusivity on the iPhone (and have to throw a lot of money), especially when Apple is such a control freak, and call quality - the one thing that Apple cannot control - is so much the suck on AT&T.
