I think you're 95% wrong. They wanted him because he was the "outsider non-politician who's going to shake up DC"

and they ran the message on that and it resonated with that party.
They also wanted him because they hate Obama and the liberals (i.e. Clinton), thanks to the FOX News juggernaut of manipulation and sound bites.
As long as he continues to do those things that are in opposition of those two things, they'll support him.
