Were McCain and Romney really cast as the devil though? I mean, there are always mouth-frothers - but a key part of the message against McCain and

Romney was that they (the candidates and Republican politicians in general) didn't have the right answers and (in Romney's case) an understanding of the problems that many Americans face.
No one credible was saying that their election would lead to tyranny/fascism etc.
