I am determine the value for cell E2 based on D2
If D2 is A, E2 should be 3
If D2 is B, E2 should be 2
If D2 is C, E2 should be 1
If D2 is anything else, E2 should show an error or '!!!!' or something to alert me that D2 is wrong

Start with first if. Next if goes into false condition. Repeat. -- nm
