I both agree and disagree with Maher's statement and it ultimately collapses because of circumstance. His point is that the fervor with which the -- (edited)

left believed McCain (or more pointedly, Romney) would damage the country, viewing those elections as critical, life-altering decisions, undermined the opposition to Trump, as looking like just more liberal overreacting. He made that speech prior to the election and his point was to say "Yeah, we cared about those elections, but wake up everyone, this is different". And he's right, it is. But he's also wrong in that it undercuts how the left was "supposed" to react to the previous challengers. Nobody had any idea that a Trump was even something that was possible, so how could you moderate your views in comparison to something you didn't know existed? And even if you did, then what? Just say it's no big deal. Vote however you want? It may be bad, but not dangerous? He was trying to serve a point that was correct, but it's ultimately a kind of silly way of making the point.
