It's not enough to help them, it has to be clear that you're helping them - and not from an ivory tower but by being engaged with them.
Democrats have spent years helping them, but at the same time, they have had to move towards the centre - in particular to demonstrate that they are competent economic managers, not tax and spenders - and some of these choices have had the impacts on middle America, and there haven't been good solutions developed for those impacts.
The other thing I'd add is that life is way more complicated and busy than it was thirty years ago, when people were looked after.
Nowadays, people are expected to look after their own healthcare, know how to look after their health, fund their own pensions for a longer retirement, have a career path, have a higher skill level, pay more for their education, etc. No wonder soundbites are appealing.
