In response to "So your answer is what? Do less but talk more?" by ty97, Queen of the Skies

(1) be optimistic (2) talk more (3) do different

I'll give an example - free trade.

America is way better off with free trade, but it benefits some people more than others, and it also leaves some people in a worse position.

Free trade is an easy scapegoat, and it's rare that you hear a politician talk about the actual benefits of free trade. The benefits are spread widely and are indirect, and the costs are specific and - well, they're indirect, but they feel direct. So it's a brave politician who talks it up. But people who support free trade need to do better at communicating the benefits and the process.

Also, no one has really put a lot of thought into how to help those people left in a worse position. I mean, sure when there's an FTA deal more money gets directed to training programs, etc, but this is more about winning enough votes in Congress to get the FTA ratified than it is about actually fixing those problems.

The other solution for Democrats is to just forget about those people entirely - write them out of their coalition, and focus on peeling part of the GOP's coalition over to their side. But it doesn't sound like you want to do that.
