Answer. It requires more work on the part of consumers and too many people show no interest. On point 2, think the conservative movement continually undermines it by insisting on incorporating its values into the system. Creationism, ant-science, promoting a view that he educated are elite snobs and out of touch de-value and undermine the development of a curious population. Point 3 puts the cart before the horse (though I think it has value). More interaction among diverse people has been shown to increase understanding, but our communities are too homogeneous. I'm not sure how you change this. Obama was absolutely correct. Democracy is taken for granted. And in doing so we have lost faith in its virtue. People have to take initiative to get involved. Maybe we have to hit this bottom to learn this.
