In response to "not enough to maintain him to 111, of course, I'm not sure about the hobbit economy -- nm" by crash davis

It's been a long time since I read the book, but as I remember it they were pretty self sufficient. -- (edited)

They grew their own food, were good craftspeople. And took care of each other. No poverty. And rarely travelled. A hobbit was perfect to carry the ring because they had no greed and were generous and happy. The ring had to work hard on a hobbit and it took years.
