One of things you'll want to do is "farm" characters by hitting the same battle over and over (simming helps this).

For a new player, I would suggest Lando immediately on Cantina 1-E. He's one of the most powerful characters in the game right now.

Also, Rey on Light 2-A is another powerful character that can be leveled up somewhat quickly. Boba on Dark 2-B and Fives on Dark 2-D (assuming that's the clone you have) are other great options early.

One thing I didn't figure out for a while is that stars are way better than gear levels early in the game. Focus on getting the shards for the characters to get them starred up quickly and then worry about getting the gear.
