a lot of it depends on what type of coins they are and what condition they are in.
are we talking about a butt load of dimes, quarters, and such?
or are we talking silver dollars? are we talking about Peace Dollars? Morgans? Trade Dollars?
they can vary in value dependent upon which kind they are (and of course condition), but also certain years of mint production have to be considered. Some Morgan dollars, for example, were minted in large quantity while a few years had a very limited mint run (these are generally more valued among collectors).
i can get into some more detail on this later if you want. i don't know HUGE amounts on them, but i can tell you a few things perhaps.
The biggest advice i can give you for the moment is to look into a good magazine. There are several in the hobby of coin collecting that are good -- i've looked at COINS and COINage magazines several times. they usually have articles on various coin collecting topics, but also usually include a price guide of various coins. This would be your best, quick and easy thing to start spot checking some of what you have to see if any of it is of great value.
of course, at the very least, i personally would consider holding onto them , if for no other reason, than for the actual silver content. who knows how the markets are going to be reacting in the coming year, but if silver prices spike like they did about 10 years ago (silver got up to the mid-$40 range per ounce for a while there), then your stuff could take on greater value. (Most of the Morgans and Peace dollars are about 1 ounce in weight each, just as a point of reference).
so, if you have some coins that are in rough condition, for example, and thus not as valuable (to the collector), they mgiht at least still have decent value based on silver content.
that's just my 2 cents' worth, anyway.
