google tells me this kind of thing is increasingly common at foodie-type places around the country. some people have nicknamed it "cheap employer

fee" and the like; and, as of this year, it's showing up in san diego a lot after there was an increase in minimum wage. instead of showing raised menu prices, they take that onto the total.
