In response to "I booked with Delta a few days ago" by Strongbad

If you book on Delta.com, there's a dire warning you have to click to accept before you can books these fares.

Delta introduced these fares, on some routes, a year or two ago. UA and now AA have since followed (though DL does not have the 'no overhead' rule)

The theory is that these fares are meant to compete against Spirit, Allegiant, Frontier, and other ULCC carriers that have rules like this. But there is some anecdotal evidence that Delta, at least on some routes, is taking the oldest cheapest fare and making that a Basic Economy fare (thus forcing you to spend MORE if you want to avoid Basic Economy). This probably isn't true on every route though
