Whether intentional or the result of bumbling mistakes, they are following a political strategy that works with extremely conservative folks.

Spicer, Conway, and even Trump himself are merely continuing the political strategy of pitting "the media" against "the people" that Spiro Agnew, Ron Ziegler, and President Nixon ramped up about 45 years ago.
And that Frank Luntz and Speaker Gingrigh really pitched into high gear.
It's a simple strategy: Protect your lies by naming the media as the enemy. If they oppose your "truth" with facts, they must be the enemy.
Trump and his cronies are just being far more forceful and direct in the strategy. But then again, they've been doing that all along. They're simply taking everything the neo-conservatives developed in the 1990s and turning it up to eleven.
