Tell me, why was I still paying $3.49/gallon after the rest of the country (including Georgia which had a legit shortage) was under 3.00/gallon? There weren't delivery problems, we're on the NW route just like Montana, Utah, Wyoming, Oregon and Washington. It's happened twice now and our attorney general has threatened to sue big oil over it. Basically the response he's gotten to his letters was "we do it because we can". Yes, higher demand accounts for some of it, but it you don't believe that a group of execs figured that it was a good way to make some fast big money, you're fooling yourself.
