I figured by now there would be games that are only like $10 to start with a basic game and the content gets added as you go

Where the DLC IS the game as opposed to an add-on to the game.
I thought for sure that was where this model was headed. It would extend the life of the game, if done properly. Just spoon feed additional chapters to players every month or so. As it is now many games take too long to roll stuff out and people that bought the game initially aren't even playing it anymore whne the content comes out.
