I don't think NWBR is dismissing that, but he's right about politics in general (or specifically, now) turns some people off.

Many people come to ST for fun - to tell jokes, be entertained or to take a relaxing few minutes break from work. If a big part of ST discussion is about how depressingly awful the political situation is, then ST isn't as fun and fewer people will visit. (The same as happens with Blood Feud or any other time one discussion dominates the others)
