ok, i'm no expert on us-asia stuff, but as bad as trump can be i'd suggest that maybe this week is at least evidence.... -- (edited)

that rex tillerson, whatever his faults, seems to be at times a somewhat calming influence. the asia angle this week was at least mildly encouraging.
the us-china call reaffirming the one china policy. the followup back channel stuff with taiwan, which seems to have gone smoothly. the meeting with abe--i know the meme is the weird handshake, but the substance is really a dialing back of campaign rhetoric on japan and more reaffimation that our security arrangement with this ally is fine. (aka article 5) i think the whole thing today about the pres reading directly from notecards is actually good--i mean, it's bad that the pres has to do that, but it's actually good that the adults don't want him speaking off the cuff.
of course, the big doofus should have listened to tillerson and kept eliot abrams as no. 2 at state, even though he criticized trump during the election. (esp. because tillerson said he needed abrams' experience!) but i'm a little less freaked out now, because i sort of feel like state at least is in the hands of someone who's got a brain.
