generous read I can give it is that they just didn't really view it as a big deal (notwithstanding their adamant protestations now that it was a violation of trust). I don't think lying really registers on Trump's radar because he does it all the time. It's just a form of communication. And I think it speaks more to the idea that Pence was somewhat on the outs. My guess is he was protesting and pushing for resignation along the way, but was being ignored until the news went public. At that point he had the leverage. Does it raise him in the eyes of the president in the sense that they see now that he was right and should be trusted? Who knows.
