1) French jazz isn't the same jazz as he plays? That makes as much or more sense than any other theory I've read. In actuality, if he had gone to Paris and "everything went right" then it wouldn't be the same movie. So writer's choice?
2) I think they both had the fantasy. The particulars don't matter.
