After John Wick last night, a weird thing happened.

It was after midnight, I'd said goodbye to my friend, and I was waiting in my car (idling it - bad!) and checking my phone before I left the parkade. It's against the law to check phones while driving here, so it seemed prudent.

Anyway, after a minute or two, I glanced out the passenger window and spotted a woman (late 50s?) approaching the car and gesturing at me.

I rolled down the window, and she proceeded to tell me how she was stranded and she has to drive a long commute home (she made it a point to have car keys in her hand for this) after a long day of taking care of 90 year olds. She said that she'd only managed to get $4 by asking the folks who were leaving the theatre.

I responded that I only had American money (which is true, I had earlier taken out about $160 USD), but in my head I was thinking that the denominations (20 and 50) were a bit too large to hand out. (Does that make me an a-hole? I feel like it does. I dunno. I considered it.)

She said "Oh, American is fine, they accept that here". So, not wanting to be overly rude, I started rooting through my wallet - and the first thing I saw was a $1 USD bill left over from my January trip. Ah-ha! And then I found some Canadian change. All told, about $2.75.

While I was rummaging, I stalled for time by asking her name and getting her to repeat her story a bit.

Now, if her story was legit, I do feel kind of like an a-hole - but as soon as I let go of the money, she abruptly turned and quickly walked away.

So that, plus the fact that I'd taken my eyes off a stranger who was leaning into my car, after just having watched John Wick, and I was kind of kicking myself over the whole thing.

Yesterday was a weird day.

Technically speaking, I was unemployed when this incident occurred.
