switching slacks is annoying. I'd generally opt for 1 slack with private or public channels as appropriate. The real downside of that is that Slack

is designed for a single group of trusted associates. It doesn't take user privacy into consideration and there is next to no moderation tools. That would be a strong argument against mixing unassociated groups into the same Slack.

For some things like the classes, a facebook page per class might be easier (my wife's doctorate cohort did this). Something to consider.
