My honest answer and this sounds weird. I wouldn't even adopt an animal that is in danger of being euthanized to an abusive person.

Being put to sleep seems to be the better of the options than the very real threat of being beaten repeatedly.

I think abusing a human being is much harder than an animal so if they have beaten a person that animal is most likely to take a much much harder and more frequent beating than a human would. The animal can't fight back or tell someone where as a human can.
