They wanted it to look like their hand was forced in releasing the one tax return that puts Trump in the most favorable light, when they were likely the ones that leaked it in the first place.
"The taxes themselves say “client copy” on them, so whoever sent them to Johnston had access to Trump’s personal files, rather than those belonging to his accountant or the Internal Revenue Service."
And then when it's met with a collective yawn -- because face it, there's just not a lot of there, there -- use that as proof that people just aren't interested in the rest of the returns.
