an intriguing thought about the power of thought/prayer

There is a conversation in the local paper FB post about driving only the speed limit in the car pool lane, aside from the moral questions about obeying the law even though 99% of the drivers are literally ignoring it...but a couple folks are saying they drive the limit because that's the 'christian' thing to do.

So my question is...why is there is a common belief in the power of thought, specifically in prayer, it is common for churches to pray specifically for the good health of a particular person, it is common that people ask for prayers for their seriously ill parent etc, and even on the lowest motives, the stupid posts 'can this horribly disfigured child get an amen' as if clicking like or post amen could possible do anything for the person who's image was probably stolen for the cynical usage of like farming.

People believe in the power of positive thoughts of friends and complete strangers. So why do they not care that there are a dozen drivers stuck behind their slow moving butt all seething hatred and vile thoughts at them? If thoughts have any possible power to nudge outcomes of anyone's potential future, why would anyone court ill will from a more direct line of sight than a completely disassociated request from 3rd parties and strangers?
