The whole point of Obama was an olive branch to the Red States. He came to them as moderate in the mold of Bill Clinton - he was never a liberal. Unfortunately, all that was seen was "black guy!" who must be a liberal come to take guns and give money to other black people. This spawned the teabaggers. Who then got representatives elected who then grid locked policy to a near standstill...none of this was compromise. None of this was interested in discussion. It was government shutdowns and teabags hanging from hats at protests.
I'm all in favor of talking things out but if the other side refuses I'm not sure there's much to talk about. At some point you have to realize that the opposition isn't the least bit interested in hearing from you. And I think it's naive to think that compromise is possible in this climate. It's John Kerry-esque.
