I'm not even upset by his wife convincing him...it annoys me she did so by saying God had a plan for him.

Okay -- if you're out of the blue offered one of the most important jobs in the world unexpectedly, there's always going to be "uhhhhhhhh, I can't do this" feelings, especially as an outside the box choice.
But "God isn't done with you yet?" That's not a selling point for a job based on reason, logic and intellect!
