I agree with you, it's a lot more "free" than I expected it to be, ala NMS
I ran into the geology/radioactive issue also. I decided to hold off on finishing that one until I completed the main quest which scrubs the atmosphere ala Planet #1.
The robot base is the last big portion of the main Eos quest. There's 1 small part after and then you're back to the big base or next planet.
