Also, the republicans loved to claim they weren't involved in the process, but Obama did everything he could to involve them. I remember the

televised meeting where Obama came to the Hill and sat down with them and said what do you want in this bill and what don't you like. And one after another they said, "we just think we need to start over from scratch", to which the president said, "that's not going to happen" (it was obviously just stalling). A couple of them said "well I don't like X, so we should start over" and Obama said, ok, let's take out X (which they did) and still no traction. They spent a year working on it and tried everything to get some bi-partisan support (actually they eventually I think did get Snowe in the senate).
