I agree that he does have friends but I don't pity him for it. The answer is simple: don't be an asshole.

We all know people who don't have many friends for a few reasons - they're shy, they're good/nice people but just drift around others...
This guy is an unrepentant asshole to everyone. He relishes the opportunity. He doesn't like people. He views them as "things" and in most cases to be collected or conquered (or both).
I do feel sorry for the kids because they are adults so they see their father through the eyes of a child and now an adult. I've always said - one of the defining moment of a person to becoming an adult is seeing your parents not as a child. Those kids must be quietly horrified in their most honest moments with themselves.
