There is a glass half-empty/half-full aspect to it, of course. On the one hand, he tells his nephew that he can't get past it. What I've decided to focus on is that despite what he explicitly states, he still finds a home with a room for Patrick. The fact that he finally feels needed by someone again is impacting him more than he appreciates/understands.
