Yup, most airlines have a non-rev dress code (it varies by airline). But United hasn't handled this well so far.

It's an interesting case because it's not the non-revs complaining, it's a separated, disconnected third party who happened to be on the flight who blew this all up.

The short answer is: stupid policy or not, they should follow the policy. But United just quoting the policy to people on Twitter is simply NOT the good PR move.
