I have some vague recollection of them playing some festival in Washington when I was in fifth or sixth grade.

Might have been homecoming. Might have been some spring festival or something. Can't remember exactly, but it was sometime around 1977 or '78.
One of the guys in my fifth grade class was a close cousin of REO Speedwagon's guitarist and he took about a dozen of us to the show. We talked about it for years because we thought we were so cool for seeing them before they moved to LA and "sold out."
'Cause among all of us stalwarts of the Central Illinois high school punk music scene of the early 1980s, selling out was the worst sin imaginable.
