Japan turns to Basil Fawlty for teaching English ahead of the Olympics

It's interesting to me that the method of teaching English in Japan hasn't changed since I lived there when I was a senior in high school. We lived in northern Honshu (Misawa AFB) and a high school farther north (in Aomori, a much bigger city) asked our high school to send Americans up for the weekend so the Japanese kids could practice their English. Our school was very small (there were only 40 seniors) so the group that went up was also small - maybe half a dozen kids at most. I went up a few times. Very few of the Japanese kids could speak English well and were embarrassed to try. They were great at reading and writing English and sometimes someone would pass a note with a question.

Those trips were a lot of fun. If I spoke Japanese I would go back to teach English.
