My new laptop has a 940mx with 2GB of ram. The Steam VR test just scoffs at it.
My understanding is that the difference between 1060 with 6GB and 1080 with 8GB matters a lot in VR performance.
Historically, you're absolutely right, but the need for permanent backgrounds is changing the situation.
